Split the bill calculator
Split a restaurant check evenly, or by what each person actually ordered with tax and tip shared fairly. Everything adds up to the exact cent.

Pareto reads the receipt from a photo, lets you tap each dish onto the person who ordered it, and texts everyone a Venmo link for their exact share.

Split evenly adds tax and tip to the subtotal and divides by the number of people. If the total doesn't divide into whole cents, the leftover pennies go to the first few people, so the shares always add up to exactly what the restaurant charged.
By what each person ordered starts from each person's own food and drinks, adds an equal slice of any shared plates, then gives everyone the same share of the tax and tip as their share of the food. If you ordered 30% of the food, you pay 30% of the tax and 30% of the tip. This is the fairest way to split when one person had a salad and another had the steak and two cocktails.
Example
Three friends spend $100 on food: Alex $50, Sam $35, Jordan $15. Tax is $9.50 and they tip 20% ($20).
| Person | Food | Tax | Tip | Pays | Even split |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | $50.00 | $4.75 | $10.00 | $64.75 | $43.17 |
| Sam | $35.00 | $3.33 | $7.00 | $45.33 | $43.17 |
| Jordan | $15.00 | $1.42 | $3.00 | $19.42 | $43.16 |
An even split would have Jordan paying $43.16 for a $15 meal. Splitting by order puts everyone at what they actually spent.
Questions
How do you split a bill with tax and tip?
Add up what each person ordered, then give each person the same percentage of the tax and tip as their share of the food. Someone who ordered 30% of the food pays 30% of the tax and 30% of the tip.
Should tip be calculated before or after tax?
Tip is customarily calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator tips on the subtotal by default; you can also type in the exact tip amount you left.
Is it fairer to split evenly or by what each person ordered?
Splitting by order is fairer when people ordered very different amounts. An even split is quicker when everyone ordered about the same. The calculator shows both so you can compare.
